About me
About me Press Exhibitions

Hello and welcome to my website, my name is Graham Hanks and I’m a figurative artist from Doncaster England.

After 3 years at Doncaster Art College I left to become a professional sculptor for many years then worked for a while as a design engineer, but since 2008 I’ve been concentrating on developing my skills as a painter.

My greatest passion these days is for painting people, I love the challenge of trying to capture the inner intelligence and human spirit of the subjects I paint, for me thats what makes a great figurative painting (or any kind of painting come to that) - the soul of the artwork.

Since turning to portraiture I’ve had paintings selected for juried exhibitions, sent paintings to private collections in America and Canada and I’ve been asked to contribute to articles in the Artists & illustrators magazine.

I’m very much inspired my the old masters and try to capture something of their technique in my work but interpreted in a more modern way, with simple compositions and hopefully a more up to date approach to light and colour.

Although it has been suggested in the past that I should be ‘looser’ and more impressionistic in my work, trying to do so has always been an unhappy experience for me - as a compulsive perfectionist in everything I do I tend to be just as precise and perfectionistic in the execution of my paintings.

I used to worry about this believing that my paintings might be missing something by not being more ‘painterly’ but now however I simply accept that that’s the way I am - I just wouldn’t be true to myself and my pshycological profile if I didn’t paint in fine detail.
